"Like most self-identifying feminists, I have complicated feelings about the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues. On the one hand, athletic women are celebrated in beautiful locations. Those models, who have been culturally diverse ever since I’ve been old enough to see them at the newsstand, are named on the cover rather than remaining anonymous. On the other hand, I thought, the entire enterprise comes from the male gaze, and perpetuates the objectification and sexualization of women. Not only does the new documentary Beyond the Gave: Jule Campbell’s Swimsuit Issue address those issues, it reframes them, and puts them in context of the women themselves, and it profiles the swimsuit issue’s founding editor, who was in charge of those issues for over 30 years. What’s more, the film is directed by Jule Campbell’s daughter-in-law, Jill Campbell, which adds a personal, often poignant layer to the story." --Leslie Combemale
